One of the most sobering realities in this passage is that compromise rarely begins with
rejecting Jesus. More often, it begins by relaxing around Him. We still believe. We still
attend church. We still identify ourselves as Christians. Yet little by little, other voices
begin shaping our values, priorities, and decisions.
The church in Pergamum faced teachings that encouraged believers to lower the bar
and blend in with the culture around them. The details may be different today, but the
temptation remains the same. We are constantly surrounded by messages that
encourage us to trust our feelings above God’s Word, pursue comfort above obedience,
and define truth according to personal preference rather than God’s revelation.
The question is not whether we are being influenced. The question is who is shaping us.
Take a quiet moment before responding. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind any area
where compromise may have become acceptable simply because it has become
familiar.
Where do you see the greatest pressure to compromise your faith in everyday life?
The pastor said, “What you tolerate eventually becomes what you live in.” How have
you seen that principle prove true in your own experience?
